Attorney Work-Life Balance

Putting Your Health First

This program will address the importance of focusing on attorney and staff wellness as a preventative measure as opposed to identifying problems to be addressed in the workplace. Participants will leave with solutions, strategies and programs to achieve personal and professional satisfaction.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify why law professionals need a wellness “toolkit”.
  • Describe how wellness in the practice of law translates into productivity.
  • Assess a law practice for healthy and not-so-healthy environments.
  • Apply measures to help improve lawyer well-being.
  • Use available exercises to enhance their own well-being and that of others.
  • Identify the causes and symptoms of burn out.
  • Identify those most at risk.
  • Debunk common attorney myths.

For the comfort of our guests, a limited number of in-person seats are available. If you wish to attend in-person, we suggest notifying our office at your earliest convenience to reserve your seat. Walk-ins will be admitted as space allows. In-person registrations expire at the start of the presentation. We do ask that you arrive promptly; otherwise your reserved seat may be given to a walk-in attendee. All registrations are assumed to be remote unless otherwise stated. Marie Maiolo Muchow is the sole proprietor of the Law and Mediation Offices of Marie Maiolo Muchow and offers mediation services with an emphasis on personal injury claims requiring the need for a bilingual neutral. Raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Ms. Muchow is fluent in Spanish and possesses a deep understanding of Hispanic Cultures.

Having worked as an insurance defense attorney and also as a plaintiffs’ personal injury attorney, Ms. Muchow provides a balanced perspective and a deep understanding of the driving issues that will facilitate resolution of claims. Ms. Muchow brings over 22 years of experience mediating a variety of civil disputes in the Bay area.

Ms. Muchow obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Politics graduating 5th in her class with Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude Honors from the Catholic University of America, Washington DC in 1986. She received her JD from the University of Florida in 1989. While at the University of Florida, Ms. Muchow earned an Appellate Advocacy Fellowship and worked for two different personal injury law firms. 

Ms. Muchow became a member of the Florida State Bar in 1989. While living in Florida, Ms. Muchow worked as a litigation associate for a major insurance defense firm, defending business establishments such as Winn Dixie, Wal-Mart, Rite Aid, and insureds of major insurance companies such as Progressive and State Farm. Ms. Muchow then became a partner at the law firm of Maiolo Campbell & Wotton where she handled all firm litigation specializing in personal injury matters such as auto accidents, premises and products liability with an emphasis on assisting members of the Hispanic Community.

Ms. Muchow moved to California and became a member of the California State Bar in 1996. After working as an insurance defense litigation associate, Ms. Muchow founded the firm of Harris & Muchow where she served as the Managing Partner representing injured parties and litigating a variety of personal injury matters: first and third-party auto accident claims, wrongful death matters, premises and products liability claims involving serious and grave injuries and other complex multiparty personal injury litigation. In addition to offering mediation services, Ms. Muchow continues to selectively offer her expertise representing injured parties in the area of personal injury and insurance litigation. 

Ms. Muchow currently serves as a Small Claims Judge and Settlement Conference Judge Pro Tem for the Superior Court of Sonoma County and has served as panelist for the Sonoma County Mediation Program, as the Vice President and President of the Sonoma County Consumer Attorneys Association, as a Director on the Board for the Sonoma County Bar Association, and as Vice President of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Marie is currently a member of the Sonoma and San Francisco County Bar Associations, the California State Bar, and the Florida State Bar. Ms. Muchow also serves as an Adjunct Professor at the Santa Rosa Junior College teaching Discovery,  Legal Research and Legal Professions in the Paralegal Studies Program.

Brian Purtill is a civil attorney and mediator who has practiced law here in Sonoma County since graduating from law school in 1984. He has litigated and mediated civil cases of all types in the North Bay counties, and is currently the dean of Empire College School of Law in Santa Rosa, CA. In his four years as dean, he has been active in the California State Bar committees working on the revision of the rules governing California Accredited Law Schools, which have now added a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion section, and has become familiar with the State Bar’s efforts to expand the opportunity for a legal career to diverse populations. He is currently a member of the Sonoma County Bar Association’s Board of Directors, the outgoing Chair of its Alternative Dispute Resolution section, a member of the SCBA’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Section, and a member of its pipeline subcommittee, dedicated to increasing pathways to a legal education and legal career for members of diverse populations. In addition to his duties as dean, Mr. Purtill continues to conduct mediations as a member of the panel for Arbitration and Mediation Center in Santa Rosa.
